Stage 1 

The first stage of Xu Xiake's travel life was the preparatory stage before the age of 28. The emphasis is on studying the geographical and cultural heritage of the motherland, and visiting Taihu Lake, Taishan and other places with interest, without leaving a travelogue.

Stage 2

The second stage was from 28 years in 1613 to 1633 in the sixth year of Chongzhen, and the 48-year-old Ji Youqian period lasted 20 years, visiting the famous mountains of Zhejiang, Fujian, Huangshan and Songshan, Wutai, Huashan and Hengshan in the north. But the travelogue was written in only one volume, about one-tenth of the book.

 

Stage 3

The third stage is from 1636 51 to 1639 in the twelfth year of Chongzhen, and the 54-year-old Ji Youhou period lasted 4 years, visiting the mountains and rivers of Jiangnan such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Huguang, Yungui and so on, and writing down 9 volumes of travelogues.

Stage 4

Xu Xiake last traveled in 1636, when he was fifty-one years old. Lasting 55 days, he successively traveled to Hengdong, Hengshan, Nanyue, Hengyang, Hengnan, Changning, Qidong, Leiyang counties and districts, three into Hengzhou Capital, beautiful landscapes and cultural grand views. This time he traveled mainly to the southwest of China, all the way to Tengyue (present-day Tengchong, Yunnan) on the border between China and Burma, and after arriving in Tengyue, Xu Xiake unfortunately fell seriously ill and terminated his travels
